TOM BRIDGES

FREESTYLE KITESURFER

A rising star in the world of kite surfing, Red Bull athlete Tom has made waves not just on the water, but across the globe, recently taking part in thrilling stunts like launching himself from the 16th deck (129ft) of Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages' cruise ship ‘Resilient Lady’ travelling between 700 and 900 feet downwind before landing on the water. His fearless approach to his craft and his laidback style made him the perfect fit for our latest campaign, “Harness the Ocean”. Embarking on an adventure to the European kite surfing hotspot, Tarifa, Tom put the brand new Supermarine 500m to the test. Read on to learn more about Tom and see how they fared…

FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT NOT KNOW YOU YET, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO?

I’m Tom Bridge, I’m from the southwest of the United Kingdom — a small town called Exmouth — and I’m a professional kitesurfer (apparently).

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO KITE SURFING — AND WHAT WAS IT THAT REALLY HOOKED YOU?

I got into kiting through my parents. I come from a family of kitesurfers and was incredibly lucky to be exposed to the sport from such a young age. I’m one of three brothers, and we all grew up on the water together. My mum was a professional kitesurfer and a multiple-time world champion, so she was a huge inspiration to us. Going to all the events with her while Dad held things down at home with the business made for a pretty unique and special childhood. It might not have helped much with school, but it definitely shaped who I am today.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE THE FEELING OF FINALLY LANDING A TRICK YOU’VE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD ON, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

I’d compare it to solving a problem at work or cracking something in your day-to-day life that you’ve been stuck on. The relief and rush you get when you finally stick the landing — maybe after hundreds of tries — is so rewarding. You’re riding away, not quite sure what just happened, but it feels unreal. Bonus points if you get it on film.

WHAT'S ONE UNEXPECTED LESSON KITE SURFING HAS TAUGHT YOU ABOUT LIFE?

Patience. Knowing that if you put in the work and have the core fundamentals, you’ll eventually get to where you want to be.

BESIDES KITE SURFING, WHAT OTHER BOARD SPORTS OR PASSIONS ARE YOU INTO, AND HOW DO THEY INFLUENCE YOUR APPROACH TO LIFE?

I’m into all board sports. Skating and surfing are my two biggest passions outside of kiting. I also love design and fashion — the way things look, how people choose to present themselves. I think that plays a big role in influencing my style and how I carry myself on the water.

"Last year, I had the chance to jump off one of the Virgin Voyages cruise ships. It was probably the biggest and most adventurous project I’ve done to date."
